Parents How much does it cost? The cost of living at Pi Kappa Alpha is consistently less than the average cost of living in one of the residential halls, such as Residential College or Thomas Jefferson Hall. What about scholarships? Pi Kappa Alpha annually rewards its members with around $70,000 in scholarships from our Educational Foundation. Pi Kappa Alpha has a very stern zero-tolerance policy when it comes to hazing. Each chapter is expected and required to abide by this policy and the Alpha Kappa chapter is certainly no exception. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment, ridicule, or risks emotional and/or physical harm. Hazing directly conflicts with the purpose and ideology of Pi Kappa Alpha and Missouri S&T alike, and only degrades the culture that Pi Kappa Alpha has strived to create.
How much time does the Fraternity take up? Participating in the Fraternity adds additional activities and commitments to an already busy schedule in college. However, Pi Kappa Alpha does encourage time management skills which will help each member with his involvement in the Fraternity, on campus, and in his professional career. The additional responsibilities, mixed with time management skills taught specifically to new members, helps keep everything in balance. Each member will find a level of commitment that is comfortable for him. The Alpha Kappa Chapter house at Missouri S&T is one of the safest Fraternity houses in the nation. It is purposefully built to withstand any sort of fire. It is constructed with an all steel frame, fire resistant doors, fire proof drywall, and an extensive sprinkler system checked yearly. Fire drills are also performed regularly. On top of fire protection, all chapter house entrances are equipped with key pads for coded entry. Only members have knowledge of the codes, and visitors are required to be personally let in by a member of the chapter.
Finally, top of the line security cameras surround the premises and allow the members to replay any hostile or illegal activity occurring on the property. What is my role as a parent? Take time to learn about Pi Kappa Alpha and other Greek Life at Missouri S&T.
Ask your son questions about what is happening within the Fraternity, as well as what events are going on around campus. Allow him to make the decisions that he thinks are best for him and be supportive of what he decides to become involved in. Be interested in what the organizations offer to him, and offer guidance if he becomes confused. Students Tell me about living in the fraternity house. The cost of living at Pi Kappa Alpha is approximately 65% of the average cost of living in a residential hall.
This cost includes room, board, and a meal plan. The meal plan includes 14 balanced meals during the week (3 meals Monday – Thursday; breakfast and lunch on Friday). The Alpha Kappa chapter house, built in 2000 and expanded in 2007, includes first-rate housing for 104 men, a kitchen, a dining hall, and multiple study rooms. What is pledging? Pledging is a period which will assist you in overcoming some concerns about success in college. All new members experience a period of orientation.
During this time you and the other new members will participate in weekly meetings to learn about the university and the fraternity. New members will also take part in leadership retreats, community service projects, and other activities designed to build friendships among the new members and the active fraternity members.
Pi Kappa Alpha is committed to a membership education period for the new members that instills a sense of responsibility and commitment to the fraternity. While pledging, you will be assigned a roommate by the chapter, who will assist you throughout your pledging period.
The roommate is an older active member who has experience and leadership, both on campus and within the fraternity. Each new member will also be assigned a “daily duty” and weekly “kitchen duties” to help keep the house clean and presentable, which is directed to instill a sense of responsibility and respect for the chapter house. What about hazing? Pi Kappa Alpha has a zero-tolerance policy regarding hazing, and each chapter is required to abide by this policy.
Hazing includes any activity that subjects a member to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion, abuse, or mental distress. Hazing conflicts with the purpose of Pi Kappa Alpha as well as the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and it only degrades the culture and moral we have worked hard to create. Because the Greek community at Missouri S&T contributes to the social activity on campus, it has taken great strides toward creating a responsible and safe environment for its members.
Each chapter develops its own social calendar, and each fraternity is to responsibly plan events which promote a full spectrum of social activities for Greek Life. For many students, the Greek social life helps to make college a more fulfilling experience. Pi Kappa Alpha offers a family-type atmosphere, where all members are encouraged to form a brotherly relationship with each new member. Opportunities to meet new friends increase through social events offered by not only Pi Kappa Alpha, but the campus as a whole.
The Sergeant-at-Arms will usually chair the meetings of the judicial committee as necessary. The judicial committee typically has the role of censuring, suspending or fining members for their failure to uphold chapter policies or expectations. The committee could also recommend the expulsion of a member, which would require a chapter vote. The decisions of the judicial committee are typically subject to review and/or modification by the executive council. The judicial committee typically has at least four members, not including the Sergeant-at-Arms.
The treasurer chairs the finance committee which usually contains three other members with roles such as: Receivables Chairman: Discusses financial obligations with all prospective members; collects membership contracts and, with the house manager, collects all housing contracts; coordinates collection efforts with third-party service providers (e.g. University billing department or companies such as Omega Financial, Inc.) if applicable. Payables Chairman: Balances the chapter's checkbook; ensures that all checks require dual signatures (typically president and treasurer); reimburses committee chairmen for approved expenses. Reports Chairman: Develops and distributes the monthly financial reports to members, officers and committee chairmen.
The treasurer, assisted by the finance committee, typically leads the chapter in the development of its budget. That process usually includes the following steps:. Completion of chapter goal setting retreat. Solicitation of budget requests from officers and chairmen. Development of draft budgets (separate budgets for operations, housing and kitchen), taking into account the priorities established during the goal setting retreat. Presentation of draft budgets to the executive council for discussion and revision if necessary.
Presentation of draft budgets to the chapter for ratification, emphasizing consistency with goal setting retreat. The new member educator is charged with being a teacher for the new members of the Fraternity. The new member educator is typically the main liaison between the chapter and the new member class. As new member educator, you will educate the new members on subjects involving the Fraternity history, the True PIKE values, and guide them through a recommended new member program of 8 weeks or less. The new member educator needs to stay true to what is right if members of the chapter try to influence how you educate the new members. Most importantly, the new member educator must enforce the Fraternity Standards related to hazing and enforce a zero tolerance policy towards hazing during the new member program.

Assist the Recruitment Chairmen in developing the chapter's written recruitment strategy. Help develop a philosophy and strategy for year-round recruitment.
